Ten Eight Service Dogs is thrilled to host an event with the Women’s Madison Nightmares Softball Team on June 26th, 2026. This game is the 3rd annual tribute to honor Cheri Maples, former Madison Police Department Captain. Cheri (1952-2017) was an exceptional athlete, well known as one of the top 2nd base players in rec leagues in Wisconsin in the 70’s. Her dream was to play professional baseball, and being pre-title IX meant that was not an option. Instead, she fulfilled her other dreams of getting a law degree & becoming a peace officer with the Madison Police Department.

After a serious biking accident in 2016, Cheri became paralyzed from the chest down. Chris, one of the co-trainers at Ten Eight Service Dogs, worked with Cheri to train her dog Bohdi to perform service dog tasks to mitigate her disability. Concurrently, Ten Eight Service Dogs (with co-trainer Rose) was training a diabetic alert dog, Echo (who recently received this year's Dog of the Year award at the Wisconsin Dog Fair), thus, the formation of Ten Eight Service Dogs was underway. This tribute and fundraiser is a perfect merger and celebration of these three significant entities: Cheri, women’s sports, and Ten Eight Service Dogs.
