Merhba! On behalf of the ESPU board, scientific committee and local organising committee, I am delighted to welcome you all to the Maltese islands for the next ESPU Congress, in our historic capital city, Valletta, from the 21st to 24th April 2027.
A venue with medical history of its own
The congress will take place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC): few conference venues can claim a more fitting past. The MCC occupies the Sacra Infermeria, the great hospital built from 1574 by the Order of St John. In its day, it was one of the most advanced hospitals in Europe — patients of every background, from pilgrims to sailors to nobles, were treated free of charge in a Long Ward that stretched over 150 metres. By the 17th century, the building housed its own school of anatomy and surgery. The hospital had two dedicated Lithotomy Wards for removing bladder stones, and its most celebrated surgeon, Michel'Angelo Grima, was renowned across 18th-century Europe for performing a lithotomy in under three minutes. The hospital was restored and reopened in 1979 as the Mediterranean Conference Centre, winning international acclaim for the restoration. Delegates can even take a self-guided walk through the original hospital wards during the conference. It's a rare privilege to meet in a building where the practice of medicine has been evolving for over 450 years.
