In his first solo exhibition, Howard has assembled a core group of works aimed at capturing a sense of "Place" around Newcastle away from the usual views of beaches and baths. A group of works aimed at creating contemplation and reflection and a sense of calm.
Using a variety of media, including Japanese ink on paper, water colour and oil, he highlights our affinity with living with the ever- present profile of Mt. Sugarloaf. Just as Mt Fuji does for the Japanese, that profile is immediately recognised. It "places" us in the familiar. It grounds us as "home".
The works reflect our affinity with this area.
They are based in Howards earlier studies with a local Chinese/Japanese artist and teacher Amy Huang. These studies reflect Howard’s affinity with Asian art. A consistent thread in his vision and technique.
The Key works reference Hokusai’s Mt Fuji series, creating images of local familiarity given a little humour. Images of a relatable Novocastrian honesty.
