About this Event

Paint Valley ADAMH will be sponsoring a 3-day, in person, Motivational Interviewing Training. This training is made possible through grant funding provided by Grant Number 5H79TI087745-02 from SAMHSA. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the author and do not necessarily represent the official views of SAMHSA.

Registrants are not required to attend each day, and must register for each day separately.

Training will take place at the Paint Valley ADAMH Board and presented by Case Western University. CEUs will be provided by Case Western University. This free training is open to individuals living or working within Fayette, Highland, Pickaway, Pike, or Ross Counties.

Scope and Dates of Training:

9/9/2026 9am-4:30pm

Day One: Fundamentals of Motivational Interviewing Part 1

Introduces behavioral, physical, and allied health professionals to the foundational principles, spirit, and core skills of Motivational Interviewing (MI). Training will begin with an exploration of provider self-awareness and mindset, emphasizing how clinictian beliefs and communiation styles can exhance or inhibit therapuetic process. Participants will progress through the key elements of MI Spirit, four tasks, and micro-skills, while engaging in structured practice demonstration and feedback.

Day Two: Fundamentals of Motivational Interviewing Part 2

Teaches participants to purposefully utilize Motivational Intervrewing basic skills learned in Part 1 to achieve different tasks in helping the person decide and enact change. Participants will learn strategies to respond skillfuly to problems in the helping relationship to reduce obstacles in the change process, will be learning methods to establish common, person-centered goals, how to elicit and reinforcethe person's language in the direction of change, and building motivation and momentum toward change. Participants will wrap up day two learning to determine signs of readiness to plan for change and aspects of change planning process.

Day Three: Motivational Interviewing for Supervisors and Champions

Participants will review MI Resourcesfor applicability in their supervision to help staff develop MI competencies. Participants will be introduced to the Behavior Change Counseling Index (BECCI) as a resource for observing and giving feedback to staff regarding their behavioral change interactions with the individuals that they serve.
