3 4 5 DAY - 1 ( JULY )
Sankeertan
by Samarchana School of Dance
Amidst social division, saints from the 13th to the 17th centuries preached social change and equality, bringing prayer and spirituality to the common man. The 800-year-old Warkari tradition is dedicated to the praise of Lord Vitthal, a form of Lord Krishna. Every year, Warkaris undertake a sacred 250 km pilgrimage to Pandharpur to worship the Lord at the holy shrine. Along the way, they chant the Lord’s name, sing Abhangs, and listen to Keertans—a unique blend of narration, song, and dance.
Drawing inspiration from this rich devotional tradition, Sankeertan, presented by Samarchana School of Dance, is a unique composition that blends rhythmic movements interwoven with Abhangs, narration, and enactments of episodes from the lives of the saints. The presentation emphasises Naama Mahatmya—the importance of keeping the name of God in one’s mind at all times.
