Safety Beyond the Checklist: Recantation, Human Centric Interviewing & Safety Planning
About this Event

Jointly provided by the Stark County Domestic Violence Collaborative, Stark County Prosecutor’s Office, Stark County Sheriff’s Office, and Aultman Health Foundation

Join us for a full-day, multidisciplinary training focused on strengthening how professionals respond to interpersonal violence, trauma, and victimization.

Safety Beyond the Checklist brings together research, practical strategies, case studies, and professional perspectives to explore approaches that are trauma-informed, healing-centered, and human-centric.

Throughout the training, participants will examine:

  • Effective safety planning and individualized approaches to safety
  • Risk assessment and lethality indicators
  • Human-centric interviewing techniques
  • Trauma, memory, and the impact of trauma on disclosure
  • Neurodiversity and its implications for communication and response
  • Intersectionality and the unique experiences of individuals impacted by violence
  • The complex dynamics of victim recantation
  • Strategies for balancing empathy, safety, investigation, and justice

Across all sessions, the conference emphasizes seeing and responding to the whole person with empathy, compassion, and respect—while maintaining sound investigative, advocacy, and justice practices.

Participants will leave with practical tools, strategies, and greater insight to:

  • Better support individuals impacted by trauma and violence
  • Strengthen interviews, investigations, and case decisions
  • Recognize and respond to risk more effectively
  • Promote safety, autonomy, and self-determination
  • Improve collaboration among criminal justice, healthcare, advocacy, and other multidisciplinary professionals
  • Foster more effective and compassionate responses to victimization

Continuing Education

Continuing education hours have been requested for:

  • Attorney CLEs
  • Social Work CEUs

  • Nursing

Approval and the number of hours awarded are subject to the requirements of the applicable licensing or credentialing organization.

Lunch

Lunch will be on your own. Participants are welcome to bring a lunch or eat at one of the many restaurants close to the training location.

We look forward to bringing professionals together for a meaningful day of learning, reflection, and practical skill-building as we move beyond the checklist and toward more human-centered responses to violence and trauma.

As we have done in previous years, we are asking attendees to bring donations to the seminar to support the two domestic violence programs in Stark County, Alliance Area Domestic Violence Shelter and Domestic Violence Project, Inc. Those who bring items or make a monetary donation will be given tickets for a chance to win several raffle baskets.
