The 27th Annual Towpath “Train”ing Run, held on Saturday, June 6, is a non-competitive group run held on National Trails Day to benefit The Rutgers Cancer Institute, with a $.50 donation for every mile we run or walk! In 2025, we contributed more than $4000, thanks to the generosity of our participants and generous donors!
In 2017, Health line Media named the “Train”ing Run one of the “10 Best Marathons in the Northeast” and you don’t even have to run the marathon distance to take part.
Run part, or all, of the 34.6 miles on the D&R towpath together in a group! The ‘trains’ (of runners) depart from Trenton and make their way at pre-determined paces toward the destination station. The train stops at each ‘station’ along the way to pick up other passengers (runners or walkers). All trains are scheduled to reach their destination at Grove 4 in Johnson Park at the same time. Snacks, water, Gatorade and support are provided along the trail. Feel the camaraderie of the group as we finish together as one in Johnson Park (one of the most important and rewarding parts of the event!!)!!
The run will finish at approximately 11 a.m. and we picnic and celebrate well into the afternoon. Picnic includes hot and cold food, as well as beer, sangria, soft drinks, and water.
Bus transportation from Grove 4 in Johnson Park to your starting point, support on the towpath, food and drinks at the picnic and donation to Rutgers Cancer Institute are all included in your registration fee! I ask you to find us a better race bargain!!
In keeping with the theme of National Trails Day, we invite other running clubs to join us and celebrate the beauty and serenity of the towpath. We offer a $100 donation to the visiting running club with the most members and $50 for 2nd place and $25 for 3rd place. Huge thank you to all the running clubs who have supported this event in the past!

Run Sign up will allow you to change buses after you register, if you decide to do fewer or more miles. Each bus can accommodate up to 35 runners.
As you will see, there are 12 different bus departure times from Johnson Park Grove 4 to get runners out to their start locations along the towpath.
We will have access to hundreds of parking spots in Grove 4 and other nearby lots in Johnson Park . We will also support runners and walkers from a 7:30 pace to a 15-minute pace. Walk/run your distance at your pace and finish at the same time as those who started in Trenton and ran 34.6 miles. Imagine 300+ runners and walkers finishing as one!!
