Introduction to Scent Work Class
The goal of our Intro to Scent Work program is to introduce dogs and their handlers to the exciting and rewarding world of scent detection. Much like a game of hide and seek, Scent Work is inspired by professional detection dog tasks—teaching dogs to locate a specific odor and communicate its presence to their handler.
Our training approach uses marker or clicker-based learning during the early phases to build clarity and enthusiasm. Following a crawl-walk-run progression, this program emphasizes teaching the indication behavior first, making it easier to develop the full sequence of scent detection skills.
This method is designed to build sub-skills before layering them into complex tasks, making it accessible for all dogs—regardless of breed, drive, or handler experience level. By focusing early on clear, consistent indications, we aim to reduce common training challenges related to odor commitment and communication, both in sport and professional detection.
This class focuses on foundational skills for sport Scent Work using AKC and NACSW-approved odors (Birch, Anise, Clove). Instruction supports growth on three levels:
Dog skills (odor recognition, indication)
Handler skills (timing, handling, reading the dog)
Overall team development.
Each handler will receive a Detection Dynamics Mini "FOX BOX" with their signup. This will be integrated into classes and is included with the cost.
Additionally, each handler will receive a "Student Starter" Single Odor Kit with Birch Odor from K9 NW Source.
Class Format:
While handlers attend with their dogs, only one dog is worked at a time, making this an excellent option for dogs that are shy, sensitive, or reactive around other dogs or people. It’s also a great sport for those seeking a lower-impact activity that emphasizes thoughtful engagement over high arousal.
Important Notes:
Dogs must be crated in your vehicle between runs. No indoor crating is available.
If your dog is reactive, please let us know in advance. We also support the red bandana system for visual awareness.
