250+ Years of American Civics and News
The League of Women Voters of Sioux Falls will host the local session of “250+ Years of American Civics and News,” a free statewide educational series helping South Dakotans better understand the foundations of American democracy, how news is produced, and how to evaluate information in a rapidly changing media environment.
As the United States commemorates its 250th anniversary, this interactive program explores how civics and communications organizations have shaped the nation—from Revolutionary War newspapers to today’s podcasters. The session highlights the separation of powers, checks and balances, civic responsibilities, and practical tools for identifying trustworthy news and information.
The series is sponsored by South Dakota News Watch, South Dakota Public Broadcasting (SDPB), Chiesman Center for Democracy at the University of South Dakota, Mike Huether Public Service Academy at South Dakota State University, and the League of Women Voters of South Dakota.
The series has drawn strong attendance and positive feedback across the state. The Sioux Falls event is open to the public and the media.
