Join us for the 24th Annual Summer Flute Retreat in Starved Rock Country on June 16-22, 2024.

TUITION:
$350.00 per participant before May 31, 2024. $365.00 if deposit is postmarked after May 31, 2024; Includes tuition, admission to all SFR activities and recitals, Summer Flute Showcase on June 20, 2024, daily catered lunches, and T-shirt. MINI CAMP half day 1:30-4pm $200.00 (tshirt/no lunch)
DAILY SCHEDULE for remainder of week (M-F) will be 8:30am-4pm. (**Half day option for little flutists. Call for details 1-4:30pm, Lunch not included)
PERFORMANCES: (Open to the public & FREE)
Thursday, June 20, 2024, 6pm Summer FLute Showcase at Starved Rock Lodge.
Saturday, June 22, 2024 9:30am Final participant recital for all participants in FULL/MINI camps. Congregational Church of Peru.

HOUSING*:
Those participants residing outside of the immediate Illinois Valley area who will need housing accommodations must submit a written request with application no later than May 31, 2024. Participant accommodations will be with a limited number of host families and priority given to those under age 18. Participants choosing to find their own accommodations will be at their own expense and will not be supervised.
MASTER UNIT:
Participants will be selected to perform in daily master classes with Gerald Carey. Selection is based on audition on Opening Day and is limited to no more than 8 performers. All participants will be asked to supply a list of flute literature that they have performed or are currently working on. This should include solos, etude materials, etc.
ENSEMBLE UNIT:
Daily work in this unit will focus on flute literature for small chamber groups featuring specifics on tone, rhythm, and balance. The number of participants in the ensemble unit is not limited.
WAITING LISTS: If your application is received after the camp reaches maximum enrollment, you will be put on a waiting list. All applications are dated upon receipt and are processed in order of arrival. You will be notified of your wait-list status. You have the option of remaining on the waiting list or withdrawing your application. Your $50.00 deposit will be refunded if we are unable to offer you a spot.
SCHOLARSHIP: A limited amount of partial scholarships are available to those in need. Requests will be granted to those eligible only if request is submitted with $50.00 deposit and application prior to May 31, 2024. *Not every scholarship request will be granted due to limited funds
Sue Gillio, SFR Coordinator
is the flute instructor at Illinois Valley Community College, owner of Music Suite 408 in Peru and director of the Illinois Valley Flute Ensemble. She received her BA and MA from Western Illinois University in flute performance where she studied with Gerald Carey. She is Principal Flute with the Illinois Valley Symphony, and has performed in the Quad City Symphony, Heartland Philharmonic, Knox-Galesburg Symphony, Dupage Symphony and Peoria Symphony. She was a featured soloist with the Northwest Indiana Youth Symphony, Illinois Valley Symphony, IVCC Wind Ensemble and Illinois Valley Youth Symphony. She traveled to Italy (1998, 2004) as part of the Rome Festival orchestra. Ms. Gillio serves on the executive board of North Central Illinois ARTworks, is a member of the Chicago Flute Club and National Flute Association and is on faculty at flute camp in Princeton, New Jersey. She was awarded the 2014 Entrepreneur of the Year by the Illinois Small Business Development Center and was an OMNI Honors award winner for Excellence in music in 2018.
Gerald V Carey is mostly retired, and lives in Glen Ellyn, IL. Before retirement he was principal flute of the Quad City for 29 years. He has also been principal flute of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the New Orleans Summer Pops Orchestra, the Knox-Galesburg Symphony, the Eastman Symphonic Wind Ensemble (under the direction of Frederick Fennell) and the Eastman Philharmonia (under the direction of Howard Hanson). He has also played in the Rochester Philharmonic, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Rochester Civic Orchestra, the New Orleans Opera House Orchestra, the American School Woodwind Quintet (Fountainebleau, France with Nadia Boulanger), and has performed with the St. Louis Symphony and the New Orleans Philharmonic. He retired from Western Illinois University where he was Professor of Flute and a founding member of the Camerata Woodwind Quintet. Since he is only “mostly” retired, he still teaches Summer Flute Camps in Peru, IL; the Westminster Choir College Conservatory in Princeton, New Jersey, and teaches/coaches/conducts various students and groups in the Chicago area. Mr. Carey has also been a faculty member of the Eastman School of Music, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the University of Illinois, and DePaul University. He has Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the Eastman School of Music (a student of Joseph Mariano), and completed his D.M.A. studies (ABD) at the University of Illinois. Grants and Awards received include the Fellowship in the Creative and Performing Arts from the University of Illinois, the Eastman School Graduate Scholarship, and the Eastman School’s Performer's Certificate. He has presented numerous concerts, recitals, and masterclasses from coast to coast in the United States and in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Taiwan, Turkey, and the former Yugoslavia. He has recorded for Coronet, Mercury, Everest, Music Minus One, and Opus One Records.An active and Lifetime member of the National Flute Association, he has served as President (1990-91), Convention Program Chair (1989), member and Chairman of the Board, Competitions Coordinator, Exhibits Coordinator, and Program Book Editor. He was awarded the NFA Distinguished Service Award in 2008. He is also a Lifetime member of the Chicago Flute Club, and has been a Board Member and Editor of the CFC newsletter, Pipeline.
Ellen Huntington enjoys an active career as a soloist, teacher, and orchestral and freelance musician. She is second flute with the Quad City Symphony Orchestra and has also performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. As a soloist, Ellen has performed at venues such as the Kennedy Center, the Chicago Cultural Center, and several National Flute Association Conventions. She is on the faculty of North Central College in Naperville and North Park University in Chicago. She joins harpist Lillian Lau as a founding member of the Lyrebird Ensemble, a flute and harp duo devoted to performing works composed exclusively for that instrumentation. The duo has performed LIVE on Chicago's WFMT, National Flute Association Conventions in Charlotte and Las Vegas, and at the American Harp Society National Conference in Tacoma, WA with the lecture-recital, "The Golden Age of the Flute and Harp Duo." Ellen is a Miyazawa Artist. She received her Bachelor of Music degree Magna Cum Laude from Northwestern University where she studied with Walfrid Kujala and Richard Graef. She was awarded a University Fellowship to pursue her Master of Music degree with Katherine Borst Jones at The Ohio State University. She completed the Doctor of Music degree at Northwestern University with her dissertation entitled The Flute and Harp Duo in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries.
Darcie Fleming Willmann, MBA,
is an Ottawa Township High School alumna. She graduated from Oklahoma State University in 2014 with a BA in Music Performance, studying flute with Virginia Broffitt Kunzer. After graduation, Darcie became a member of the faculty at Music Suite 408. In January of 2015 she began working as a flute specialist for the Carolyn Nussbaum Music Company based in Plano,Texas. Soon after beginning her time at CNMC, Darcie realized her passion for flute repair. She began training in repair in 2016 and spent the remainder of her time at CNMC as a flute repair technician. In Fall of 2019 she began her MBA studies at Auburn University where she graduated in December 2020. Darcie currently works as an Operations Area Manager for Amazon. In her free time, she continues her flute repair business and teaches private flute lessons from her home as well as plays in a Dallas area flute choir, Flute Suite. Darcie joined the SFR staff in 2013.
Natalie Lindig is a graduate of the Wonsook Kim College of Fine Arts at Illinois State University earning a bachelor degree in both music education and flute performance. Currently, Natalie teaches at Putnam County Elementary and Primary School in Granville/Hennepin, IL as the kindergarten through fifth grade general music teacher, and the fifth grade beginning band director Additionally, she teaches the flute class at Music Suite 408.. She has been an instructor at Smith Walbridge Drum Major Clinics for the past three summers. At ISU, she was a member of the Big Red Marching Machine, a member of the top collegiate concert band, Illinois State University Wind Ensemble. She was recognized with the Charles Bolen Music Faculty Scholarship. Currently, she plays with the Illinois Valley Wind Ensemble, Illinois Valley Flute Ensemble, and sings with the United Church of Christ’s Choir. Natalie joined the SFR staff in 2022.
Anne Badger received her Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College in Music and English and a Master of Arts from Yale University. She studied organ with Richard Litterst, piano with Donald Walker, Minka Roustcheva, and Wilbur Price. Anne was a freelance pianist and specialist in early music in New Haven, Connecticut and the New York metropolitan area. She served as the Professor of English at Bucknell University, with a field specialization in eighteenth Century British literature, and with particular interests in the interrelations between the arts. She currently holds the position as the organist at the First Congregational Church UCC in Ottawa and maintains a private piano and organ studio. She is working on a book in the field of architectural history titled "Alexander J. Davis, American Architect" based on the David historical archives in New York City, to be published by Mount Ida Press.
