About this Event
218. Good Medicine Songs (am) “Parents Welcome”
Facilitator: Tanya Zilisky teaches Halq’emêylem language and Stò:lō culture in the Fraser Cascades SD. Christine Schaufert is the music specialist at Ecole Christine Morrison Elementary. Holly Arntzen is a musician, singer and co-founder and co-writer of Good Medicine Songs. They have all worked extensively with Good Medicine Songs in their respective areas of work.
Participants will learn how to get started with the user-friendly, wonderful Good Medicine Songs resource, available free online. They will sing in Halq’eméylem, learn Stó:lō stories and teachings, and physical movement and hand dances for the songs. GMS songs incorporate Indigenous world view in a cross-curricular way, weaving together language arts, ecological sciences, visual arts, history, dance and much more. This work is relevant because it is the result of collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. When children sing for their families, it moves reconciliation work forward in a positive way that engages the entire school community. Bringing Good Medicine Songs into the classroom promotes social and emotional learning through song, story and language.
