Creating a New Nation: President George Washington and the Southern Tour
Presented by: Lindsay M. Chervinsky, Ph.D.
Dr. Lindsay M. Chervinsky is a presidential historian and Executive Director of the George Washington Presidential Library at Mount Vernon. Dr. Chervinsky is the author of the award-winning books Making the Presidency: John Adams and the Precedents that Forged the Republic and The Cabinet: George Washington and the Creation of an American Institutionand co-editor of Mourning the Presidents: Loss and Legacy in American Culture. Dr. Chervinsky regularly writes for public audiences in publications like the Washington Post, TIME, USA Today, CNN, The Wall Street Journal and provides commentary and historical context for outlets like CBS News, C-SPAN, Face the Nation, the New York Times, and NPR.
Join Dr. Lindsay M. Chervinsky to learn about how George Washington used presidential tours to bring the new federal government to the American people, forge bonds between citizens and the Constitution, and build trust in the presidency. These tours included multiple stops in Georgia featuring meetings with local leaders, tours of Revolutionary War ruins, and extensive public celebrations to commemorate Washington’s arrival. As the nation celebrates its 250th birthday, Dr. Chervinsky will explore why 1776 was just the beginning of the founding of the nation.
