Iowa’s Tax-Free Weekend is back! Take advantage of this once-a-year chance to save while you shop your favorite Downtown Iowa City stores for back-to-school and fall finds.

Friday, August 7 – Saturday, August 8, 2026
⏰ The sales tax holiday starts at 12:01 a.m. Friday and runs through midnight Saturday (does not include Sunday). Downtown shops will be open during their normal business hours.
✅ What’s included:
No state or local option sales tax will be collected on clothing and footwear priced less than $100 per item. There’s no limit on how many qualifying items you can buy. If each item is under $100, it’s tax-free! "Clothing" refers to any article of wearing apparel and typical footwear intended to be worn on or about the human body.
❌ What’s not included:
The exemption does not apply to watches, watchbands, jewelry, umbrellas, handkerchiefs, sporting equipment, skis, swim fins, roller blades, skates, and any special clothing or footwear designed primarily for athletic activity or protective use and not usually considered appropriate for everyday wear.
