St. Lucie County and Ecological Associates, Inc. (EAI) are working together to offer a public education and outreach program focused on threats to sea turtles nesting along our beaches, including the impacts of coastal lighting. St. Lucie County maintains one of the lowest disorientation rates in the state of Florida and public outreach is an important component to this success.
The 2026 St. Lucie County Sponsored Turtle Walk program is a great way for you to engage in conservation efforts and learn more about the biology of sea turtles. The evening begins with a biologist led presentation (about 45-60 min) covering topics like biology, the nesting process, and different threats to sea turtles. While you are listening to the presentation, one of our scouts will be patrolling the beach looking for nesting turtles. If a turtle is found in the appropriate stage of nesting, the group will move to the beach and watch the nesting process.
The staff at EAI specializes in sea turtle research and works under a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Marine Turtle Permit (#26-160). This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for you to join us under the direction of our experts to ensure minimal disturbance to the sea turtles and to expand your knowledge about these amazing creatures.
Our informational talk will begin promptly at 9:00 PM. Doors open for check-in at 8:45 PM. Please do not arrive any earlier. Guests will be responsible for driving their own personal vehicles to and from the beach.
Before registering please consider the following:
1. We suggest children be 6 years or older to participate. No infants will be allowed to be carried on the beach.
2. Absolutely NO white lights, flash photography or cell phones will be allowed on the beach during our walk. This is very important in order to protect our sea turtles!
3. You must be in good physical condition and able to walk approximately 1 mile on the beach to see the turtles. There is a potential for tough terrain including uneven surfaces, rocks, shells and seaweed.
4. Prepare and dress accordingly. The program will take place outdoors on the beach, rain or shine, with possible exposure to biting or stinging insects. Please apply insect repellant at your vehicle before we get on the beach.
5. Please do not bring any valuables on the beach with you. EAI will not be liable for the loss or destruction of any personal items during the turtle walks.
6. We would like you to enjoy this experience. We follow strict state regulations to ensure the safety of the sea turtles. EAI staff reserves the right to cancel or stop the program if at any time anyone is causing a disruption to any nesting turtle.
7 . Participants will be required to sign a Turtle Walk Activity Waiver and Release Form prior to the event.
You will receive a confirmation email after making your reservation. If you have any immediate questions please contact [email protected].
