This Plant Exchange was started in the fall of 1998 by the Medtronic Garden Club and then in 2011 expanded to include the Target Garden Club- We do this Exchange twice a year- its always the Saturday after Memorial Day and the Saturday after Labor Day. Items for sharing include all types of plants, shrubs, trees, pots, and gardening supplies - really anything gardening, plant, landscaping, and houseplant related. There is no cost to participate or for the plants and other items available.
This event is open to the public, so invite your friends, family, and neighbors to join in the fun – the more participants the better the exchange!
This is a great opportunity to get together with fellow gardening enthusiasts to share plants, supplies, and ideas.
HOW IT WORKS: This is a VERY FAST and casual event. Everyone will park in the lot and put their items to share out on the ground outside their vehicle, people will browse and visit between 8:45 and 9:00 a.m. at 9:00 a.m., leaders will blow the air horn or whistle to signal "GO". At that time you may pick up what items you would like. (To be fair - PLEASE do not pick up anything before 9:00 a.m.!) Once you have collected items you want it is advised you put them inside your vehicle so no one thinks they are available to take.
Past exchanges have gone VERY quickly (15 to 30 minutes max), so plan to start on time for the best selection.
Bring anything you have to share in, or with, containers, if possible. Plastic bags, boxes, pots, etc. all work fine. Labeling and additional information about the plant(s) is absolutely most appreciated.
You do not have to bring anything or take anything to participate.
This is a very casual informal event that many people look forward to. We usually have an excellent mix of experience levels in attendance, so please bring your questions. There is most likely someone around who will be able to answer your gardening and plant questions. Past spring exchanges have brought 50+ participants.
JUMPING WORMS ALERT CAUTIONS:
With the new threat of transferring invasive jumping worms and other invasive hitchhikers, it is advised to take recommendations put forth by the DNR, and others to minimize the transfer of this to your property.
The video by the MN DNR below is very helpful as it provides info and a visual on the worms movement with helpful tips to minimize the risk of transferring these worms.
** Tips and recommendations **
* Remove soil from all plants before transporting them to limit the spread of weeds and worms. This helps to remove earthworm cocoons (egg cases) or W**d seeds.
* Completely submerge plant roots in water and wash away remaining soil. Actively look for worms. Protect clean roots for transportation and exchange.
* Water is sufficient to remove soil and other materials from the roots.
* Share bare-root plants when possible.
*** Also make sure you wash/brush soil off your tools and shoes before leaving a site and going to another. ****
