he IEEE EMC & SAE Chicago chapters welcome the annual Oktoberfest social and technical meeting where members, guests, and interested attendees come together for a festive evening of conversation and professional networking. We will have Oktoberfest-themed food, refreshments, learning, and more, so come and connect with your local technical community colleagues.
This is a FREE event and everyone is welcome to attend – registration is required.
Speakers:
Nick Koeller – “Diagnosis of Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) Emissions”
Nick Koeller is the Lead EMC Engineer at E3 Compliance which specializes in EMC & SIPI design, simulation, pre-compliance testing and diagnostics. He received his B.S.E in Electrical Engineering from Grand Valley State University and is currently pursuing his M.S.E in Electrical and Computer Engineering at GVSU. Nick participates in the industrial collaboration with GVSU at the EMC Center.
Title: Diagnosis of Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) Emissions
Nick will present the process by which he analyzes SMPS RF Emissions using a combination of EMC chamber measurements and Near-field probing on the bench to determine appropriate countermeasures based on noise characteristics.
Dr. Bogdan Adamczyk – “Shielding – Radiation from Apertures”
Dr. Bogdan Adamczyk is professor and director of the EMC Center at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) where he develops EMC educational material and teaches EMC certificate courses for industry. He works closely with E3 Compliance, an on-site industrial partner of GVSU. He is an iNARTE certified EMC Master Design Engineer. Prof. Adamczyk is the author of two textbooks: “Foundations of Electromagnetic Compatibility with Practical Applications” (Wiley, 2017) and “Principles of Electromagnetic Compatibility: Laboratory Exercises and Lectures” (Wiley, 2024). He has taught numerous EMC courses for industry and has authored over 100 publications on EMC education, measurement, and testing, and presented hardware demonstrations at several IEEE EMC Symposia. Prof. Adamczyk is a past senior contributor to the Incompliance Magazine writing a monthly column “EMC Concepts Explained” (2017-2026).
Title: “Shielding – Radiation from Apertures”
An ideal shielded enclosure, would have an infinite conductivity, no apertures, seams, or cable penetrations, and would completely surround an electronic product. Practical shielding enclosures have finite conductivity, contain apertures, seams, or cable penetrations and cannot completely achieve such isolation. Apertures (slots or holes) reduce the effectiveness of the shield. Babinet’s principle, provides a way to analyze the radiation from slot antennas leading to the conclusion that apertures can be as effective radiators as antennas of the same dimensions.
Agenda:
6:00 – 7:00pm Social Hour (includes Oktoberfest food and drinks)
7:00 – 7:30pm Chapter Announcements
7:30 – 8:15pm Technical Presentation
