Welcome to the 55th Annual Nowthen Threshing Show! This year featuring John Deere tractors and engines.Founded in 1837 by Vermont blacksmith John Deere in Grand Detour, Illinois, the company revolutionized agriculture with the first commercially successful self-scouring steel plow, designed to cut through sticky Midwestern soil. After moving to Moline, IL, in 1848 for better transportation, the company grew, incorporating as Deere & Company in 1868.
Key Historical Milestones:
1837: John Deere creates the first steel plow from a broken saw blade, solving the issue of dirt sticking to cast-iron plows.
1848: Operations move to Moline, Illinois, to access water power and rail transportation.
1868: The business is incorporated as Deere & Company.
1918: John Deere enters the tractor business by purchasing the Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company.
1956: The company begins global expansion, opening its first foreign manufacturing plant in Mexico and acquiring a German tractor firm.
1990s-2000s: Introduction of GPS, GreenStar precision technology, and AutoTrac automated steering transforms the company into a leader in digital, data-driven agriculture.
Today, Deere & Company is the world's leading manufacturer of agricultural machinery, widely recognized for its green and yellow equipment and the "Nothing runs like a Deere" slogan.
We're hoping to showcase many examples of John Deere history at the 2026 Nowthen Threshing Show. We hope to see you there.
