This two-day event is designed for new faculty who have joined SFU over the past academic year or will be starting this September.
About this Event

We hope you can join us!
New faculty members are invited to join us for our two-day orientation on September 3 & 4. We hope both days will provide you with an opportunity to learn more about SFU and meet some of your new colleagues.
*Note: Registration for the New Faculty Orientation via Eventbrite is only required for new faculty members. SFU staff attending the orientation should email [email protected] to confirm attendance.


New Faculty Orientation - Sept 3

This orientation will provide you an overview of SFU including panel discussions with experienced faculty members and introductions to services and departments that are here to support and assist you as you begin your career at SFU. You will also meet the Senior Leadership Team.

Teaching and Research Orientation - Sept 4

Teaching - Morning (for teaching and research faculty)
9:15am - 12:15pm | coffee and refreshments will be provided
Join us to explore effective strategies to kick-start and sustain your fall teaching semester. Get prepared to make the most of your term from the beginning, foster inclusive and welcoming learning environments, and establish meaningful connections with your students whether your class is face-to-face, blended, or online. Using interactive case studies of common teaching situations, together we will explore practical strategies to meet unexpected twists during your teaching journey such as managing disruptions, providing accommodations, promoting academic integrity, integrating technology, and encouraging student participation.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

· Identify a variety of approaches tailored to your teaching context for creating a positive and inclusive learning environments

· Gain applicable strategies for setting clear class expectations, managing disruptions, providing accommodations, promoting academic integrity, and encouraging student participation

· Discover solutions to enhance your courses tailored to your specific teaching needs, including the selection and integration of technology tools

Demystifying Research Landscape at SFU - Afternoon (for research faculty only)
1:15pm - 4:30pm | coffee and refreshments will be provided

As you begin your research journey at SFU, we want to ensure you are equipped to navigate your new role with confidence. Starting a faculty position comes with many challenges, from securing grants and recruiting students to managing research space and balancing teaching with administrative duties. We invite you to join an interactive orientation session with experienced research administrators and senior faculty mentors who know SFU's research environment well. They will answer your questions and offer practical advice. This session is a chance to gain useful insights, connect with others, and get the support you need to start your research career with confidence.
