Capturing Kenosha is excited to announce that we will be hosting the second annual Kenosha County Birdathon. A “birdathon” is when a group of birders/photographers set out to capture images of as many bird species as possible within a certain amount of time. Different species are worth different point values based on their scarcity. The person who accumulates the most points wins the contest. THIS YEAR'S WINNER WILL RECEIVE A SET OF VORTEX OPTICS TRIUMPH HD 10X42 BINOCULARS!As part of this contest, we will be raising funds for the Bong Naturalist Association and the conservation work they do out at Richard Bong State Natural Area. For more information on their work visit https://bongnaturalistassociation.org.
2026 KENOSHA COUNTY BIRDATHON CONTEST RULES
1) Contestants will capture pictures of as many different bird species as possible between Friday, April 10th and Sunday, May 10th. Pictures taken before or after the event are not to be used; we are using an honor system for this.
2) All pictures must be taken by the individual contestant. They cannot use someone else’s pictures.
3) All pictures must be taken in Kenosha County.
4) Pictures must be taken of wild birds, domestic birds are not eligible for entry. Pictures at feeders are allowed, but birds in their natural environment are preferred. While this is a documentary style contest, we highly encourage participants to prioritize artistic compositions and quality as well!
5) All entries must be posted to the Capturing Kenosha Facebook group in a single post containing images of each individual species captured. ONLY ONE PICTURE PER SPECIES! All entries must be posted no later than Monday, May 11th. Entries should list the name of each species captured along with the corresponding point value and then the total points scored for the contest (see bird list with corresponding point values). This information should be in the main portion of the post, not with the individual pictures within the post.
6) All post entries should use the hashtag #2026KenoshaBirdathon to ensure we see all entries.
7) A panel of judges from Capturing Kenosha will verify bird species and points earned by contestants. Image quality may factor into verifying species. Judges' decisions are final.
8) As part of this contest, we will be raising funds for the Bong Naturalist Association and the conservation work they do out at Richard Bong State Natural Area. For more information on their work visit https://bongnaturalistassociation.org.
9) Contestants are encouraged to donate one of the following:
$1 for each species they photograph
$1 for every point they earn in the contest
And/or a donation of any amount they are able to give
In addition, contestants can share their post with friends and invite others to contribute to the cause! All donations can be made at https://www.capturingkenosha.com/donations
