Come celebrate the unveiling of a long-awaited historic marker commemorating the remarkable legacy of the Lincoln School for Colored Children.
A Juneteenth fellowship meal catered by Norvell's BBQ will follow the 11:00a ceremony. Freewill offerings appreciated. Bring your lawnchairs & stay awhile!
The first Lincoln School opened on the northwest side of the city in 1882. The last, was the robust building that stood at the corner of E. Wabash Ave and Pine Street from 1922 - 1981, now the site of Crawfordsville's Lincoln Park. Lincoln's last year of operation as a school was 1947.
This new historic marker will be the capstone of a 2024 City of Crawfordsville park renovation, dedicated to preserving the memory of the many students, educators and families who were the Lincoln School for Colored Children.
This event is sponsored in part by a 2026 "Restoring Hope-Restoring Trust" Wabash College Community Partnership Grant.
