Every year since 1998, the DSBA Multicultural Judges and Lawyers Section honors the life and legacy of Judge Haile L. Alford, the first African American woman appointed to serve on the Superior Court of Delaware. Judge Alford was appointed by Governor Mike Castle in 1992 and served on the bench until her untimely death in 2003 at the age of 54.

The MJL Section will honor recipients of the Leadership Award, Rising Star Award, and Community Service Award. The MJL Section will also grant the 2026 Alford Excellence Award to future practitioners who have sat and will sit for the February and July 2026 Delaware Bar Examinations.
