This year we are observing the 81st Anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. We hope you will join us on the evening of Saturday, August 8, at the Gordon Shelter, Stephens Lake Park for an outdoor peace gathering and lantern float marking this anniversary and amplifying our call for an end to the threat of nuclear annihilation.
We will begin gathering at 6:30 p.m., share a potluck dinner and have time for lantern-making, socializing and listening to music by Tanneal Cheshire, Steve O’Dell and Danielle Muscato of The Juicy Beets, before the start of the program at 8 p.m.
Speakers at the event include John Betz, decorated Vietnam War vet and President of the local Veterans for Peace chapter; Peaceworks steering committee member, Molly Jones; and poetry by Peaceworks Director, Mark Haim.
We will follow this with the traditional, commemorative lantern float at approximately 9 p.m.
Participants may wish to bring their own folding chairs.
We are very conscious of the suffering being experienced now in Gaza, as well as in other current wars in Ukraine, Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, DRC, Burma, etc. Our gathering is a call for peace everywhere as well as serving as a call for the mutual, verifiable, universal and incremental abolition of nuclear weapons. Violence begets violence and it's up to us to stop it.
