2025 SMU Sports Management Conference for DECA Students

Everyone will be provided with a book – “The GM’s Handbook” by Troy Kirby & Chris LaRue

Agenda:

9:00 AM - 9:15 AM: Check-in (light refreshments?) Divide attendees into three groups using colored bracelets

9:15 AM - 9:25 AM: Welcome Session

• Introduction to St. Martin's University Troy will provide individuals from the University to speak briefly
• Event overview and goal-setting

9:30 AM - 9:50 AM: Keynote Speaker – Sports Marketing – Troy will provide

• Speaker: [Suggested Speaker: Kristen W. Brown, sports marketing expert or similar]
• Topics: The intersection of sports, business, and entertainment.
• Insights into trends, career opportunities, and how DECA students can apply these lessons in their future careers.

9:55 AM - 10:25 AM: Breakout 1

· Presentation Skills for Sports Professionals – Troy will provide speaker

• • Learn how to craft and deliver compelling presentations in the sports industry. – 9:55 – 10:10 speaker teaches public speaking skills
  • Practice public speaking techniques and receive feedback. 10:10 – 10:25 (students practice in small groups, adults wander and interject)

10:30 AM - 11:15 AM: Breakout 2

• Marketing Techniques in Sports & Entertainment – Troy will provide speaker
• • Explore strategies to engage fans, build brand partnerships, and market sports events. 10:30 – 10:50 speaker provides instruction in these areas
  • Hands-on activities to develop real-world marketing campaigns. 10:50 – 11:15 am – students prep Integrated Marketing Campaign or practice their ICDC presentations.

11:20 AM - 12:30 PM: Competition Troy will provide 12 – 16 judges

• DECA students preparing for ICDC in sports-related categories will compete in practice scenarios and case studies.
• Students not attending ICDC will prepare and demonstrate their skills in sports management areas like marketing, sponsorships, and event planning for next year’s DECA events.

12:35 PM - 1:15 PM: Lunch & Networking & Free Headshots (for LinkedIn) Troy will provide lunch and photography

• Opportunity to connect with industry professionals, DECA alumni, and fellow students.

1:15 PM: Optional tour of the University campus.
