Join us for the Third Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Event at UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday, Jan. 22 in the Dreyfus University Center Laird Room at 4:30-6 p.m. This year's theme is "Freedom: Your Voice, Instilling Hope and Joy" and will feature Kevin Leavy.
The event is free, but registration is encouraged by noon on Jan. 22. A virtual option will also be available; registration is required to receive the virtual link.
Kevin Leavy, a proud Beloit resident for 61 years, has dedicated his life to service, leadership, and community empowerment. As the longest-serving African American City Councilman in Beloit's history, Kevin currently presides as President of the Beloit City Council, a role he has held multiple times throughout his remarkable tenure of over 15 years.
Professionally, Kevin serves as the Director of Food and Nutrition for Freeport Hospital in Freeport, IL, where he oversees critical operations ensuring quality and excellence in food service and patient care. Additionally, he is the founder of Leavy Enterprises, a company committed to training and certifying individuals in food sanitation policies and procedures. Through his courses, over 100 individuals have been trained and certified, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to excel in the food service industry.
Beyond his professional and civic roles, Kevin has made a lasting mark on education and mentorship. As the first African American Chairperson of the Blackhawk Technical College Board, he led with vision, serving on numerous committees to advance education and opportunity. His commitment to youth development is evident in his role as former President of the Black Male Role Model Group, mentoring and inspiring the next generation of Black leaders.
A former Vice President of the Beloit Board of Education, Kevin contributed his expertise to several key committees, further cementing his legacy as a champion for equity in education. Currently, he serves as Chairman of the Rock County Board of Supervisors, continuing his mission of advocacy and community betterment.
Essentially, faith is central to Kevin’s life. As chairman of the Deacon Board and Choir Director for the Men’s Chorus at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Beloit, Wisconsin, he serves with humility and commitment, supporting the church's mission and its members. Above all, Kevin treasures his family—his wife Ruthie, their four children, and three granddaughters, who inspire his unwavering dedication to building a brighter future for Beloit and beyond.
