About this Event

Winter Fire School takes place on the Oregon Public Safety Academy (OPSA) campus in Salem, Oregon. All classes will be the two full days of the school, so be prepared to stay until approximately 5pm at the end of day on the 23rd. Lodging for Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd is free for participants traveling over 75 miles and breakfast and lunch are provided for every attendee.


Courses offered:

NFA New Fire Chief :Challenging Issues -Prerequisites: ICS 100 and 200 level

-This 2-day course is designed to develop the managerial, administrative and leadership skills necessary for the first-time fire chief or chief officer who desires a leadership position in their department. This course addresses critical knowledge and skills pertaining to the responsibilities of a fire chief.

NFA Strategy and Tactics for Initial Company Operations -Prerequisites: ICS 100 and 200 level

-This 2-day course is designed to meet the needs of Company Officers (COs) responsible for managing the operations of 1 or more companies during structural firefighting operations. This course is designed to develop the management skills needed by COs to accomplish assigned tactics at structure fires.

NFA Decision-Making for Initial Company Operations-Prerequisites: ICS 100 and 200 level

-This 2-day course is designed to develop the decision-making skills needed by Company Officers (COs) to accomplish assigned tactics at structure fires. All activities and scenarios used in this course are based on structure fires. With the real possibility of being the first to arrive at an incident, the CO’s initial decisions will have an impact throughout the entire incident. It is vital that COs be able to make good management decisions that have a favorable impact on the eventual outcome.

NFA Preparation for Initial Company Operations-Prerequisites: ICS 100 and 200 level

-This 2-day course is designed to develop a better understanding of the role and responsibilities of Company Officers (COs) in preparing their company for incident operations and to clarify the transition from firefighter to CO and the new roles relating to leadership and safety.

This course is designed for COs, acting COs or senior firefighters responsible for the management of a single fire company at an emergency incident, including those officers who are responsible for company readiness, personnel safety and leadership as it relates to company operation.

NFA Incident Safety Officer -Prerequisites: ICS 100 and 200 level

-This 2-day course examines the Safety Officer's role at emergency responses.This course focuses on operations within an Incident Command System (ICS) as a Safety Officer and emphasizes response to all-hazards types of situations.

NFA Building Organizational Support for Community Risk Reduction -Prerequisites: ICS 100 and 200 level

-This 2-day course is designed to help fire and emergency services learn what community risk reduction is and how to build organizational support for it. This course will address the challenges that fire departments face in shifting their priorities from response to prevention. In many departments, community risk reduction is still considered a low priority. This course will show you how community risk reduction can help you and your department become more of a community player in times of decreased budgets.

NFA Residental Sprinkler Plan Review-Prerequisites: ICS 100 and 200 level

-This course is appropriate for building and fire code officials whose responsibility it is to review and approve residential sprinkler plans. Such officials include fire inspectors, fire marshals and building code inspectors with at least 1 year of experience on the job. The audience should have an understanding of the history of water-based fire protection systems and methods used to verify hydraulic calculation.

NFA Incident Command System for Structral Collapse Incidents-Prerequisites: ICS 100 and 200 level

This 2-day course is designed to provide fire officers with an understanding of command operations at structural collapse incidents.

Students completing this course will be able to:

  • Describe the aspects of a structural collapse.
  • Explain basic command procedures and Incident Command System (ICS) organizational structure.
  • Identify various resource levels, types and capabilities used for structural collapse incidents.
  • Identify critical factors and issues that affect scene management.
  • Describe all unique operational considerations used at a structural collapse incident.
  • Describe all response operations phases associated with a structural collapse incident.
  • Describe the technical rescue expertise and equipment required for safe operations and effective incident management.

Students attending should understand and be able to apply the ICS concept.

NFA Command and Control of Wildland Urban Interface Fire Operations for the Structural Cheif Officer-Prerequisites: ICS 100 and 200 level

This 2-day course is designed to provide students with the essential tools and skills to operate safely in a wildland urban interface (WUI) incident.

Course content covers:

  • Interface incidents.
  • Fire behavior.
  • Safety and operational considerations.

Vehicle Extrication - Full PPE required (no SCBA needed)

-This 2-day training is for new participants only! Limited to 4 slots per District. Please select your corresponding District when registering. If you do not fall within the District you registered under, you will be removed from registration. Please reference the Fire Training Regional Map to locate your respective District. Please note that tickets are separated by District but this training will take place on DPSST's campus.

Firefighter Hands-on Skills Training- Prerequisites: Full PPE to include turnouts, helmet, SCBA, spare bottle and mask, boots, gloves and hood. Must be OSHA groomed for Live Fire Training. Must be 18 years of age.

-This 2-day training involves the following evolution.Limited to 4 slots per District. Please select your corresponding District when registering. If you do not fall within the District you registered under, you will be removed from registration. Please reference the Fire Training Regional Map to locate your respective District. Please note that tickets are separated by District but this training will take place on DPSST's campus.
