Join Intermountain Bird Observatory scientists for a morning of songbird banding at our beautiful Boise River site! Our trained biologists will be catching, banding, and releasing wild songbirds all morning as part of our standardized breeding season monitoring protocol.

Stay for the whole event or drop in any time during the morning to visit our station. We recommend you stay at least an hour to have the best chance of seeing some birds. It's a good idea to arrive near start time on hot days since bird activity decreases as the day heats up. We may close our nets as early as 10am if it's a very hot day.

Among other information, bird banding gives us data on population numbers, age and sex ratios, reproductive success, breeding timing, migration movements, and individual longevity. This information can be used to study the impacts of climate change, the importance of different habitat types, and changes in species populations.

Registration is limited to 50 participants. We will use a waitlist system to notify you if a slot becomes available. If you cannot attend, please be courteous and cancel so that someone else can use your slot.

This project is fueled by from visitors like you. Thank you! Please give online today, or plan to bring cash or check if you'd like to make a donation in person.

Please read the below information carefully.
  • If you register but cannot attend, please be courteous and cancel so that someone else can use your slot.
  • There is a roped-off staff only area surrounding the banding table. After birds are processed we will bring them outside the staff area for you to observe more closely.
  • Please follow all rules and signage posted to ensure we are able to continue to offer these visitor opportunities.

Bird banding is unpredictable. We cannot promise that we will catch birds, but hope that everyone has the opportunity to see a bird be banded. Depending on how many birds we catch, visitors will be able to help release the birds by holding out their hand as a release platform.

We may close our nets early or not open the station if the weather is bad (too windy, rainy, hot, or cold). We may reschedule due to weather. Please check your email for updates before attending.

All ages are welcome. This site is somewhat wheelchair/walker accessible (but please contact us ahead of time for details so that we can accommodate you).
