Topic: Temporary Cooling During Construction

General Contractors (GCs) running a commercial construction project have three fundamental goals: avoid delays, earn a profit, and keep the client happy. An effective climate control strategy during construction can be a key component toward achieving these goals. It is essential in expediting specific tasks, such as drying poured concrete or ensuring glue used in flooring installations is ready for the next step. Contractors often push to use the permanent HVAC system during construction as the means for climate control; however, there are inherent risks that all stakeholders should weigh before approving an early startup. Utilizing rental equipment for climate control should be the first consideration and is a more cost-effective approach. It also reduces the contractor’s job-related risk and liability by effectively keeping temperature and air quality-related problems under control.

SPEAKER : Chuck Dale-Derks, PE, LEED AP

Chuck Dale-Derks is a husband of 40 years, father of 5, grandfather of 4. He is a Principal at McClure Engineering in St. Louis,Missouri, where the majority of his work is for design of education projects with tight budgets and short schedules.

Prior to his 33 years at McClure Engineering, he worked as a facilities engineer for a chemical manufacturing and packaging company, and also has worked as a manufacturer’s representative.

Mr. Dale-Derks is a Past President of the St. Louis Chapter ASHRAE, has served and chaired Region VI committees, TC-1.6 Terminology, TC-7.3 Operation, Maintenance and Cost Management, TC-7.8 Owning & Operating Costs, and SPC-180 Standard Practice for Inspection and Maintenance of Commercial Building HVAC Systems. He received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state ofMissouri.
