Gabriel Heinemann Quartet & Jim Baker, Dan Bitney, Keefe Jackson, Ausberto Acevedo
About this Event

Project: Join us for a night of improvisation and experimentation as the Gabe Heinemann quartet pays homage to the musical legacies of Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry. The quartet will also feature new and original music from each of the band members, showcasing a broad mixture of styles and moods.

Gabe Heinemann: Gabe Heinemann is a saxophonist and composer based in Chicago. Originally from Madison, WI, he learned from musicians such as Pete Ross, Nick Moran, and Paul Hastil. After continuing his musical development at Oberlin Conservatory, where he graduated in 2022, Gabe moved to Chicago and played with his groups alongside veterans such as Vincent Davis and Jim Baker. Since then, he has moved to New York and is working to play his original music across the city.

Owen Frankel: Owen H Frankel is a bassist, vocalist, and composer based in Chicago, Illinois. In 2022, he graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where he studied with Peter Dominguez and Gerald Cannon. While a student at Oberlin, Owen was a founding member of groups Slampson and The Music Quintet. He has also released much music under his own name that highlights him as an adept and unique indie singer-songwriter. An in demand improvising musician in Chicago, Owen can be seen playing regularly at venues around the city and beyond with musicians such as the Vincent Davis, the Jamal Damien trio, and Ernest Dawkins; as well as his recently formed project, Our Mutt.

Solomon Lindenberg: Solomon Lindenberg is a pianist, composer, and educator originally from Door County, WI, and currently based in Chicago, IL. Lindenberg can be seen and heard playing in groups including his trio; the progressive quartet Folkus, which he co-leads; and bands featuring musicians Ernest “Khabeer” Dawkins, Ted Sirota, Dustin Laurenzi, Matt Ulery, and Katie Ernst. He has performed at some of the great Midwest jazz venues, including Jazz Showcase, Hungry Brain, Merrimans' Playhouse, the Estate, and Epiphany Center for the Arts. While mainly an exponent of the jazz tradition, he is also largely influenced by European classical, gospel, folk, rock, and avant-garde music.

Colin Dorion: Chicago based drummer, Colin Dorion, seeks to bring his own unique voice to any musical situation, while still being deeply rooted to musical traditions. He does this by rigorously studying the music of the past, keeping up with the music of today, and by experimenting with new sounds and ways of thinking about musical expression. Whether it’s performing with Bobby Broom or Ernest Dawkins, Colin will always put the music first and play with genuine sincerity.

Keefe Jackson ..the impeccable logic of his lines and the richness of his tone leave you wanting more…

–Bill Meyer, Chicago Reader

Jackson has an impressive grasp of the tenor’s textural capabilities and exploits this knowledge to vary his attack; one minute ripe or overblown, guttural or throaty, then poppy or wailful.

–Michael Jackson, DownBeat

Jackson often gives the impression of existing in a parallel universe to whatever piece he’s improvising over, full of ideas that jut out of the surroundings rather than comfortably fit in.

–Nate Dorward, Paris Transatlantic…influences and ideas are rearranged and combined in a way to exude something not only contemporary, but beautifully futuristic.

–Clifford Allen, All About Jazz

…Jackson’s tenor saxophone improvisations balance ardor with control, spontaneity with thoughtfulness…

–Art Lange, Point of Departure

Jackson’s marbled tone expresses a lovely lyricism no matter how brusque or serrated his lines get.

–Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader
