PREREQUISITE: Completion of the NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home
NRA Basic Personal Protection Outside the Home provides students with the knowledge, skills and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for effective and responsible use of a concealed handgun for self-defense outside the home. This is an intermediate skills shooting course focusing on how to use a firearm for personal defense. Attendees are required to have already mastered basic safe gun handling and marksmanship skills prior to enrolling in the course. It is structured for adults (age 21 and older) who are not disqualified from possessing a firearm as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law, are of good repute, and can demonstrate the basic defensive pistol skills presented in the NRA Basics of Personal Protection in the Home Course. .
NRA Basic Personal Protection Outside the Home is divided into two sessions.
On day-1 approximately 8-hours is spent on mastering the essential skills and knowledge to carry, store, and use a firearm safely and effectively for personal protection outside the home. On day-2 at least 6-hours are spent at a local gun range focusing on the development of defensive shooting skills. Students can expect to expend at least 200 rounds of ammunition (250-300 is recommended) during this segment.
Attendees receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure and appropriate (level one/level two) course completion certificates(s).
Equipment requirements:
• Adequate Ear and Eye protection
• A 9mm or larger semi-automatic pistol or revolver appropriate for carry
• A holster that protects the trigger, and a magazine pouch
• A suitable concealment garment, light jacket or vest
• Comfortable shoes that support a full range of motion. No sandals or flip-flops.
• At least 200 rounds of standard centerfire ammunition.
• (2) or more magazines (for semi-automatics) or (2) speed-loaders (for revolvers)
• Comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for training in an outdoor setting
NOTE: If inclement weather forces us to complete the shooting portion of this class at an indoor shooting facility, additional range charges will apply.
