Join Galveston Historical Foundation as we welcome the 1877 ELISSA, the Official Tall Ship of Texas, back to her home port following her history-making Galveston 250 Voyage.
Free and open to the public, this event invites the community to gather at Pier 21 to welcome ELISSA home. Please note that this is a harbor watch party as the ship enters Galveston Harbor on her way to her berth at the Galveston Historic Seaport. ELISSA is expected to enter the harbor around noon. Guests are encouraged to create and bring welcome-home signs and help give the captain and crew a memorable return.
As part of the Galveston 250 Voyage, ELISSA visited New York City, Boston, Savannah, and Pensacola as an official participant in the America 250/Sail 250 celebration. Along the way, the voyage introduced thousands of visitors to Galveston's rich maritime history while showcasing the vital role historic ships continue to play as living museums. By connecting audiences with stories of commerce, immigration, innovation, and international exchange, ELISSA reinforced Galveston's legacy as one of America's great historic ports. ABOUT THE 1877 TALL SHIP ELISSA, THE OFFICIAL TALL SHIP OF TEXAS | Galveston Historical Foundation brought ELISSA, an 1877 square-rigged iron barque, from a scrapyard in Piraeus Harbor, Greece to Galveston to begin restoration work in 1978. By 1982, GHF staff and volunteers completed restoration and transformed this rare, historic vessel into a floating museum that would actively sail. Today, the 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA is one of only three ships of her kind in the world to still actively sail and welcomes over 40,000 visitors annually. She also serves as the Official Tall Ship of Texas, a National Historic Landmark, and a symbol of the Gulf Coast’s historic beginnings as a seaport and active waterfront.
