1854 Foundation Speaker Series : Whitemarsh and the Fight for Philadelphia
About this Event
On June 24, join us at 5:30 pm for cocktails and from 6-7:00 pm for an 1854 Foundation Speaker Series presentation of "Whitemarsh and the Fight for Philadelphia" led by Professor Jeffrey LaMonica.
British General William Howe led his force into Pennsylvania on September 9, 1777, defeated General George Washington’s Continental Army at Brandywine and Paoli on September 11 and 20, and occupied Philadelphia on September 26. The British thwarted Washington’s attempt to retake Philadelphia at the Battle of Germantown on October 4. The defeated Continentals moved to Whitemarsh on November 2 to monitor enemy movements and plan their next maneuver.
Washington used his time at Whitmarsh to decide whether to retake Philadelphia from the British or go into winter quarters at Valley Forge. This choice would shape the outcome of war. The Fifth Pennsylvania/Philadelphia Militia played a critical role in these events around Philadelphia in 1777. Please join us as we honor our history as a region during the early days of our country's beginnings.
NOTE: Due to the heightened interest in Revolutionary War history leading up to the celebration of America's 250th anniversary, this event may sell out quickly. Please reserve your tickets as soon as possible to ensure access. This event will not be recorded.
