Please make sure to add in your calendar the Souper Bowl event is on Friday, November 14 in the Bryan High School Commons. The Souper Bowl this year will run from 4-7 PM. For $10 a person, the meal includes a hand thrown bowl, soup, bread or crackers, a dessert, and lemonade or water. Students volunteer to serve, to clean, and to set up and tear down–and all the proceeds go to the care of people in homelessness at the Sanctuary Homeless Shelter. These students rock! This is how it started: In the spring of 2009, Brandon Knott and Matt Neff had a vision of Bryan City Schools hosting a meal as a fundraiser for the local homeless shelter, the Sanctuary. Based on Defiance’s Empty Bowls event, the Souper Bowl was started by Neff and Knott with organizational help from Steph Mazur. This event was first held on Friday, November 13, 2009, and it raised $3300. It remains the largest single fundraiser for Sanctuary each year. Various student groups have aided in the process, including the art club, Interact, FCA, FCCLA, and the foreign language clubs. The staff also has been an integral part of this annual event, volunteering their time, soups, and baked goods to the endeavor. Chip Wood, as the liaison to Interact, as well as former teacher Kim Pepple, often solicited soup donations from area restaurants.
So why come? Your presence encourages the students, Mr. Brandon Knott, Steph Mazor, Chip and their entire team of students and teachers who work incredibly hardhard-countless sleepless hours to make this event a success. Let’s make sure you go and say Thank You to them for this service. While you soup and fellowship, you provide for the people in homelessness. It’s a beautiful and meaningful time. So don’t miss it.
