Mark your calendars! 📅
On August 1, 2026, you will have the opportunity to contribute and raise awareness for increasingly urgent global issues regarding clean water, sanitation and hygiene in developing countries. The Ground Water Consortium, along with the Ohio section of American Water Works Association and several community partners, will be holding the 16th annual 5k race at Water Works Park bike path in Fairfield benefitting Water for People (www.waterforpeople.org). You can run or walk, come for leisure or compete, bring your furry friends if you like but they must be on a leash. We are also having two challenges for bragging rights and annual trophies - our Corporate Challenge and our Regional Utilities Challenge – so start gathering your teams today! Any way you participate helps contribute to making a difference.
Every day, an average of 6,000 people die in developing countries because they don’t have access to clean water and proper sanitation. The vast majority are children under the age of 5. There are 2.6 million people globally that don’t have access to adequate sanitation facilities dying from preventable epidemics of cholera, dysentery, hepatitis and other diarrhoeal diseases. Water for People helps those people by installing locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities and health and hygiene education programs. The process doesn’t end there, however. In order to create long-lasting changes in the communities of countries such as Malawi, Guatemala and India, Water for People works with in-country staff members who partner with governments, the private sector and nongovernmental organizations to use local technology and involve the community in the process of planning, building and implementing the solutions. Through education and involvement, the communities are able to maintain the systems, creating long term differences.
We are fortunate to have amazing local water resources in the form of the Great Miami Buried Valley Aquifer, providing millions of gallons of clean water to the residents of Hamilton and Butler counties daily. While all of the 5k profits will go directly to Water for People, the event will also help to raise awareness of the value of our local water and the importance of protecting our aquifer.
For any questions about the race, signing up your company or utility for the challenges or sponsorship opportunities please contact:
