13 Going on 30 (PG, 2004) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth
On her thirteenth birthday, awkward and desperate-to-be-popular Jenna Rink (Jennifer Garner) makes a wish to be "thirty, flirty, and thriving," instantly transported into her adult body seventeen years in the future. Waking up as a successful magazine editor with a glamorous apartment, a hunky boyfriend, and seemingly everything she once dreamed of, Jenna quickly discovers that her adult life is far more complicated than her childhood fantasies imagined—she's become someone she barely recognizes, estranged from her best friend Matt (Mark Ruffalo), and caught up in professional betrayals she doesn't understand. As Jenna navigates her unfamiliar adult existence with the enthusiastic naivety of her thirteen-year-old self, she must reckon with who she's become and rediscover what genuinely mattered to her before ambition and popularity reshaped her priorities.
Director Gary Winick delivers a warm, nostalgic body-swap comedy that balances broad fish-out-of-water humour with genuine emotional sincerity. Jennifer Garner's performance is the film's centrepiece, capturing thirteen-year-old exuberance and wonder within an adult body with irresistible charm and comic precision. Mark Ruffalo brings understated warmth to Matt, grounding the film's fantastical premise in real emotional stakes. The film's affectionate use of 1980s nostalgia, most memorably its now-iconic dance sequence set to Michael Jackson's "Thriller," captures a specific pop-culture sweetness that resonated deeply with audiences. Beneath its high-concept premise, the film offers a genuinely heartfelt meditation on integrity, friendship, and staying true to oneself amid the pressures of adult ambition.
