Get ready for the 11th Annual Cancer Health Disparities Symposium 2026, where we'll tackle the unequal impact of cancer within the community
About this Event

We invite you to join us for a vital symposium addressing cancer health promotion, a critical issue impacting populations across New York City and beyond.

This meeting is a one-day Cancer Health Promotion Symposium at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, focused on addressing gaps in knowledge and competence related to cancer disparities affecting underserved populations. The symposium will bring together clinicians, scientists, trainees, and community partners to examine the current state of cancer health disparities research, advances in cancer biology, disparities in screening and outcomes, and strategies to increase participation in cancer research and clinical trials, to improve equitable cancer care and outcomes through education, dialogue, and collaboration.

*This Symposium is partly supported by the Brooklyn Health Promotion Center, Department of Medicine/Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

STATEMENT OF NEEDS

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart disease, and accounts for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths. It is estimated that in 2023, more than 1.9 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed. Furthermore, about 609,820 Americans are expected to die of Cancer in 2023, or about 1,670 people per day. Although we have made progress in reducing cancer incidence through prevention and screening and lowering cancer deaths through improved treatments, specific populations have benefited more than others from these advances. Underrepresented populations comprise a large subset of the NYC as well as the NYS population and would directly benefit from interventions aimed at closing the gaps in cancer health disparities.
