To date, 2024, the Philippines has registered incremental gains in its quest for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs), with its SDG Index score improving to 67.5, representing a slight gain and putting it at 92nd out of 166 countries.
Sustained progress has been achieved in poverty decline, with the percentage of the country's population living below the poverty line falling from 18.1% in 2021 to 15.5% in 2023, indicating fruitful results of economic recovery efforts and social protection interventions. The nation also recorded improvements in SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), supported by green policy reforms and digital infrastructure investments.
Challenges continue in SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) where data
indicates stagnation or regression. Based on the 2024 UNESCAP report, and at present pace, the Philippines and many countries in the Asia-Pacific region are not projected to achieve the 2030 goals, highlighting the imperative for stepped-up investments, evidence-based policy-making, and more robust institutional settings for inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development in all sectors.
Last May 2025, UN Secretary General António Guterres said that the Earth and its inhabitants are healthier when our ecosystems are in better shape. Ending poverty, halting climate change, and averting mass extinction are all made possible by repairing our damaged ecosystems.
Human activity is putting increasing strain on land, forests, and biodiversity. Over 10 million hectares of forest are lost every year as of 2024, indicating that the rate of forest loss is still worrying. Over 3.2 billion people's livelihoods are at risk due to desertification and soil degradation, while just 15% of the world's land is protected. With one million species in danger of being extinct, biodiversity is dwindling. Stopping deforestation, preserving biodiversity across ecosystems, and quickly restoring degraded land are all necessary to meet Goal 15.
It is on this light that the Bridging Leaders for Sustainable Development (BLSD) Inc. and The Asian Network for Sustainable
Development Inc. (ANSD Inc.), in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce of the Philippine Islands, with technical support
from Asuelo Management Consultancy and Impact Southeast Asia Travel and Tours, will hold the Sustainable Development Goals
Island Wide Conference, with the theme: “Pivoting the Philippine Growth through the achievements of the SDG 2030 and beyond”.
