10th Anniversary Sankofa Institute | Empowering Black Families in Community

Dr. Iva Carruthers and Reverend Dr. Otis Moss, III will engage the webinar attendees in an in-depth conversation to empower black families. These two influential African American Church leaders will discuss higher education, congregational, intergenerational faith formation, and civic engagement.

With their contributions and embodiment of loving justice for God's people and intellectual prowess as a nationally recognized leaders and influencers in religious leadership, as an esteemed educators, authors, and social justice advocates, the Sankofa Institute for African American Pastoral Leadership is honored to present the General Secretary of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference (SDPC), Dr. Iva Carruthers, and the Chaplain of the Children’s Defense Fund’s Samuel DeWitt Proctor Child Advocacy Conference, Reverend Dr. Otis Moss, III.

Dr. Iva E. Carruthers is a General Secretary and a founding trustee of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference, an interdenominational organization within the African American faith tradition focused on justice and equity issues, and a 501c3 and United Nations Non-Governmental Organization. As educator, faith leader and human rights advocate, she has traveled and lectured throughout the United States, Caribbean, South America Africa and Asia. Dr. Carruthers is Professor Emerita and former Chairperson of the Sociology Department at Northeastern Illinois University, published in the fields of sociology, instructional technology and theology and was founding President of Nexus Unlimited, computer consulting firm. A recipient of many awards, she was appointed to the White House Advisory Council on the internet, “National Information Infrastructure”, Mega Project. was recognized by the History Makers in 2003 and most recently honored by her oil portrait being hung in the International Hall of Honor at Morehouse College’s Martin Luther King Jr. Chapel. Dr. Carruthers is a frequent guest speaker before various national and international forums, including U.N. Civil Society Forums. She has served as a board member, consultant and delegate to many organizations.
