1066 Country Walk Day One Rye to Battle
THIS IS A RAMBLERS MEMBERS ONLY EVENT - BOOKING REQUIRED. THERE ARE 14 BOOKED TO WALK BOTH DAYS, PLUS TWO DOING THE FIRST DAY ONLY
Following in the footsteps of William the Conqueror and his army from 1066, Ashford Ramblers are walking the 1066 Country Walk (1066CW) over two days, commencing with the first leg from Rye to Battle.
In its entirety, the 1066CW is advertised as 31 miles in length, but allowing for inevitable extra bits, we will most likely be walking approximately between 16 & 17 miles per day or thereabouts. It is therefore up to the participant, to ensure the distance, pace & ascent is within their own capabilities, whilst being a linear walk, there are no shortcuts on either day.
It is anticipated that walkers will travel to Rye from Ashford by train, the sensible option therefore is to stay overnight in Battle, however if walking either day, then there is a station at Battle, approximately a 10 minute walk from Battle Abbey. Please note that Battle Station is on a different train line than the Ashford to Rye line, so you will need to change trains for the journey back.
This wonderful East Sussex route takes us over rolling hills, ancient woodlands & historic towns, with great views throughout. In brief day one begins by heading through to Winchelsea then Icklesham, this is stretch of the 1066CW we have walked previously on other group walks. Then it is onward towards Doleham and later Great Wood, before arriving in Battle, to finish beside the imposing Battle Abbey.
Please contact the walk leader by Wednesday 8th July to confirm your attendance on the walk, whether it be both days, or just the first or second day, there is also the option to drop out after day one if you've had enough!
Sorry no dogs on this one
Difficulty: Moderate
Ascent: 1500ft
Starting point - We will meet outside the entrance of Rye Railway Station, the plan will be to commence at 9am, to tie in with the train arrival time from Ashford. The 8.24 train arrives at Rye 8.48, there is no planned engineering work taking place.
Nearest postcode: TN31 7AX
Walk leader is Kevin Hall
