1000 Tears: Performance by Alexa Wilson

This solo abstractly and satirically as a double meaning of cutting and crying is a ritualised alchemising of social violence.
About this Event

As a new solo work by performance and dance artist Alexa Wilson, 1000 Tears (60 mins) embodies a double meaning of crying and cutting (referring to death by 1000 paper cuts) framed as a performance art dance and feminist critique of a climate that cushions social violent and devaluing modes of being. It is a ritualised tearing apart and alchemising of disempowering ideologies and experiences in a climate of both soft (passive aggressive) and hard power (violent authoritarianism).

1000 Tears was developed and presented in NYC at Triskelion Arts, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Mothership residency, Last Frontier, and in Berlin at Lake Studios Berlin, and has been developed to full length in Tāmaki Makaurau. 1000 Tears been invited to present at The Tank NYC.

Alexa creates solo performance art projects as radical body based aesthetics, commissioned group choreographies and collaborative video projects. She has presented across NZ, NYC, Europe, UK, Canada, Australia, India and China e.g Berlin at Sophiensaele, Uferstudios, MPAB, Brussels Volksroom, Vienna’s Impulstanz/LACE and Improper Walls Gallery, London’s Ugly Duck, Glasgow’s Buzzcut festival, NYC’s Grace Exhibition Space, CPR, Dixon Place, Triskelion Arts, Beijing’s Red Gate. She has won awards in NZ and created works on dance companies Touch Compass and Footnote NZ Dance Company. She is director/founder of Experimental Dance Festival Aotearoa delivering 20 artists across 10 locations in November-December 2026.
