Leon Schagrin was only a baby when the Tzadik of the small Galician town of Tyczyn told his worried parents that their fragile child was destined to outlive them all.
No one could have imagined how profoundly those words would come to pass.
Leon survived the Holocaust and the destruction of the Jewish communities of Galicia. He endured unimaginable loss, rebuilt his life, and made a choice that would define his legacy: to remember, to bear witness, and to teach.
For decades, Leon has shared his story with students, educators, communities, and leaders, giving voice to those who could no longer tell their own stories and helping ensure that the families, neighbors, and vibrant Jewish communities of Galicia would never disappear from memory.
Now, as we celebrate 100 extraordinary years of Leon Schagrin, we honor not only what he survived, but the life he built, the people he touched, and the legacy he continues to create.
In honor of this remarkable milestone, The Art of Humanity proudly establishes the Leon Schagrin Legacy Scholarship for Holocaust Teacher Training.
The scholarship will help provide educators with the training and resources to teach the Holocaust to future generations—carrying Leon’s testimony, the story of the Schagrin family, and the memory of the Jews of Galicia into classrooms across America.
This celebration is more than a birthday.
It is an opportunity to honor Leon while ensuring that the work to which he has devoted his life continues long into the future.
His story becomes their lesson.
