Glenmalure Pure Mile is proud to host our Annual Candlelight Walk to commemorate a part of local, 19th century, mining history. Folklore tells us that on Christmas morning the mining families living in Baravore would walk to Mass to the churches in Greenan and Ballinatone and that as they crossed the ford over the Avonbeg at Baravore you could trace one hundred lights as they moved their way down the valley. Details:
This is a self guided, 2km looped walk starting at Baravore Car Park.
The walk is open from 5pm and closes at 7pm.
There will be history talks and poetry at various times along the way.
Following the event, there will be light refreshments and music at the Glenmalure Lodge.
This event is open to everyone of all ages, but participants are advised to dress warmly and to bring a torch for extra light and safety.
The walk includes some rough ground which unfortunately is not accessible to buggies or wheelchairs.
No need to sign on-just turn up on the day-This is a free event !
