This workshop is an introductory en plein air methods course, not a class on how to paint from the beginning. The purpose of the workshop is to introduce students to the why and how of plein air painting, including equipment selection, efficient setup, location scouting, safety considerations, and commonly used plein air methods. The goal is for students to complete a small study painted en plein air, rather than a fully finished studio piece.
Participants should have prior experience with the medium of their choice (oil, acrylic, watercolor, or pastel). While beginners are welcome, this workshop will not cover foundational painting skills such as color mixing, brush handling, or drawing basics.
The workshop is designed as a two-day experience:
* Day 1 focuses on preparation and knowledge-building, including equipment, setup, scouting locations, safety in the field, and an overview of plein air practices.
* Day 2 focuses on hands-on application, with students setting up their equipment and completing a study using the alla prima (wet-on-wet) painting method. To allow for focused learning and consistency, the study will be completed indoors in a studio setting
We will have materials available for all mediums.
By the end of the workshop, each student will complete a small 5” x 7” piece of artwork and gain confidence in both the technical and practical aspects of plein air painting.
This is an in-person class. Register in person or online here: https://salmonriverfineartscenter.square.site/
*Financial assistance is available for those who would like to attend and are unable to pay the full fee. Please email the art center with your request. This discounted class is made possible through “Enriching Lives through Art,” a grant generously funded by the John Ben Snow Foundation.
