PARATAXE Symposium XIX AfroBerlin (African-literary Traces in and from Berlin) in Cooperation with
Black Berlin Biennale 2026 (Poetic Decolonization - Creating Homes. Multidirectional Memory. Restitution & Justice in Times of Artificial Intelligence & Neo-Colonial War)
African literature has a long, diverse, and yet often overlooked history in Berlin. For decades, Black authors have been writing in and about Berlin, shaping literary scenes, establishing networks, and creating new spaces for literature, memory, and social discourse. At the same time, many of these literary stories and voices remain insufficiently visible—both in literary history and in current public perception.
The PARATAXE Symposium XIX therefore turns its attention to traces of African literature in and from Berlin and explores which stories are told, remembered, or even omitted.
Under the title “AfroBerlin,” our symposium once again brings together authors, artists, scholars, and activists: Three panels will explore the history of Black German literature, colonial continuities, and the question of how new perspectives on Germany and Berlin are emerging. The program will address historical omissions as well as literary forms of remembrance, survival, and reparation.
With contributions by Adetoun Küppers-Adebisi, Michael Küppers-Adebisi, Roy A. Adomako, Angela Britton, Mansour Kanakassy Ciss, Arenor Anuko, Anguezomo Nzé Mba Bikoro, Prince Kamaazengi Marenga, Marianne Ballé Moudoumbou, Jameela Mupia, Elisabeth Kaneza, Stefanie-Lahya Aukongo, Salina Momade, Faheem Faraji Hemboum, Hilaire (HOBSKUR) Djoko, Asad Schwarz-Msesilamba, Lara-Sophie Milagro, MFA Kera, Beatrace Oola, and others.

The Black Berlin Biennale is a pluriversal, Afro-diasporic art, culture, and discourse platform initiated in 2012 by AFROTAK TV cyberNomads and has been an official project of the UN Decade for People of African Descent since 2016. The program combines poetry, performance, academic keynotes, and critical discourse formats to make Afro-diasporic and decolonial perspectives visible, demand transformative justice, and create polyphonic spaces of belonging.
