🦢 Matuku Muster at Nowell’s Lake 🌅Date & Time:
Weekend of 3-5 October, aiming to meet evening of Saturday 4th depending on weather.
Meet at 6:20pm at Rifle Range Road carpark
Settle in for sunset around 7:30pm
Location:
Nowell’s Lake - publicly accessible area
Description:
Join us for a special evening at Nowell’s Lake to take part in a Matuku / Australasian Bittern survey 🌿🦢. These secretive wetland birds are rarely seen, but at dusk the males can sometimes be heard booming across the lake.
This survey is being coordinated by Jenny Kerrisk as part of @LoveBittern's Mutuku Muster, with Birds NZ members helping out. You’ll need:
🔹 Some experience recognising Bittern calls
🔹 A compass (to note the direction of calls)
🔹 Warm clothing
🔹 A torch for the walk back to the cars
The survey will run for about 1-1.5 hours. Jenny will allocate listening spots on the night.
It’s a fantastic opportunity to contribute to local bird monitoring and spend time in the field with fellow bird enthusiasts. 🌌
Please note: this is mainly a Birds NZ group activity, and numbers may be limited.
