Published in 2023, “Yellowface” is a literary thriller that explores themes of identity, jealously, and the role social media plays in the publishing industry. June Hayward and Athena Liu are aspiring writers. When Athena’s debut novel becomes a huge success, June is left feeling bitter and resentful.
After a freak accident, however, Athena dies unexpectedly — leaving behind a precious manuscript for her next novel. June decides to publish the manuscript, which tells the story of Chinese laborers during WWI, using the pen name Juniper Song to mislead the public about her racial identity and market the book to an audience seeking diverse stories.
In her attempt to capitalize on the story’s potential, evidence of her plagiarism surfaces and what ensues is an intense wave of social media scrutiny and online attacks. Throughout “Yellowface” Kuang uses satire and unreliable narration to create a dark and sharp commentary on appropriation and the pressures of the publishing industry.
