✨ What to Expect
This is a focused 3-hour West Coast Swing Workshop, followed by a 1-hour practice session to try everything out.
James Barlett is an internationally respected WCS DJ, Judge, and Instructor, and the founder of West Coast Swing Birmingham. With over a decade of experience on the European circuit and a passion for building local dance communities, he brings clear, accessible teaching and deep knowledge of the dance to every class.
If you already know the five core WCS patterns, you’ll feel right at home. New to West Coast Swing? You’re very welcome—just note the day builds progressively.
We’ll start with a fundamentals session to expand your basics, then add layers like contrast, musicality, and dynamics, so later sessions may feel faster-paced if you’re brand new. You’re always welcome to jump in, observe, and take what you can.
We’ll explore variations, build style and texture, and finish with guided practice to help you apply everything with feedback.

Refresh your core patterns and explore simple variations to expand your foundation.
2:40 – 3:40 pm – Create Contrast
Add texture to your dance using contrast, musical accents, and changes in levels.
3:50 – 4:50 pm – Work on Dynamics
Learn how to adapt your movement for faster music with control and energy.
5:00 – 5:55 pm – Practice & Privates
Guided practice time with opportunities for feedback and private lessons.
