About the Artist
Highly acclaimed jazz bassist Marcos Varela has been a powerful force on the New York jazz scene for nearly two decades. A dynamic bandleader, composer, and international touring artist, Varela has performed with jazz legends including George Cables, Eddie Henderson, Ingrid Jensen, Billy Hart, Jason Moran, Geri Allen, and The Mingus Big Band.
His accolades include the 2021 & 2024 South Arts Jazz Road Grants, Mid-Atlantic Arts USAI Grant, and fellowships from YoungArts and the Betty Carter Ahead Program.
Varela’s Origin Records debut, San Ygnacio, received glowing praise from DownBeat, NPR, JazzTimes, and Bass Player Magazine, with legendary bassist Ron Carter calling him “Top notch… a truly unique musician who belongs among the top bass players in the industry.”
From international critics to jazz royalty, the consensus is clear: Marcos Varela is a singular voice in contemporary jazz — and his star continues to rise.
