✨ DETAILED FULL WALK DESCRIPTION ON OFFER FOR THIS HIKE 🌿
#########################
For this walk, we’ll follow the Cape Point Coast Trail from Platboom Beach to Gifkommetjie, with an optional swim if the weather allows. We’ll meet at the Platboom parking area and set off along the trail, passing the beautiful beaches of Gifkommetjie (meaning “poisonous little bay”).
A highlight of this section is the remarkable coastal dune vegetation, marshlands, pans, and rocky beaches fringed with kelp beds. The area is rich with rock pools to explore and is also known as grazing plains, where wildlife sightings are common. Mammals that may be encountered include antelope such as klipspringer, steenbok, and eland, as well as Cape Mountain zebra and the peninsula’s endemic Chacma baboons.
The wildness and long expanses of beach are truly unforgettable. From Gifkommetjie, we’ll continue to Hoek van Bobbejaan and then to the beach just beyond the wreck of the Phyllisia, a Cape Town trawler that ran aground in 1968. Along this stretch, you may notice maritime oddities, including raw blocks of rubber—cargo remnants from a vessel torpedoed during World War II.
On May 3, 1968, the 452-ton trawler Phyllisia was wrecked just north of the Thomas T. Tucker, south of Olifantsbos Point. Measuring 145 feet in length, she struck the shore just before midnight. Eleven crew members reached land in lifeboats, while the remaining fourteen were rescued by helicopter. Despite efforts to save her, the trawler eventually broke apart in heavy seas.
After lunch, we’ll head back along the ridge, passing striking rock features such as Balancing Rock and Aspalathus Nek. The trail will head on to Groot Blaauberg and descend back down onto the coast and return to the coast, making our way back to the starting point.
