Join us on the second Thursday of the month for this Forest School session for home educating families. We also have sessions on the fourth Wednesday of the month at Saltburn (please see separate listing).
These Forest School sessions are open to all ages from 4 years (younger siblings welcome too) there is no upper age limit.
Activities vary from session to session but our most common activities are:
Lighting a campfire
Campfire cooking
Using tools
Balancing on the slack-line
Pond dipping (seasonal)
Various activities to promote identification of flora and fauna
Various natural craft activities
Den/shelter building
There are lots of opportunities for exploring the woodland, creating in the mud kitchen, and swinging in the hammock.
You have the opportunity to purchase a Forest School skills booklet for your child - this means that at each session your child attends the activities and skills they practice will be noted and signed off. When they have successfully achieved a set of skills in one unit, for example safety lighting, maintaining, and extinguishing a campfire they will receive a certificate listing and giving them recognition for those skills. Typically it will take a child/young person approx 4 sessions to complete a unit and receive certification. The booklet contains six units.
Please note this is not an accredited certificate but is a recognition of skills achieved.
You can still attend without purchasing this booklet and your child can still take part in the same activities
The session is 12.30 - 3pm but we appreciate some families may be late and some may need to leave early; the core activities such as tool use and campfire cooking will be from 1 - 2.30pm, then 12.30 - 1 and 2.30 - 3pm we will have lots of free play opportunities.
Please check all ticket options before selecting, we have tickets for various family sizes and tickets for booking both sessions which offer a reduction. If you have more than 4 children aged 3 and over please email [email protected] and we will look at a cost for you.
The area of woodland we explore is accessed by a wood-chip path, it may be difficult with a pushchair but generally it is manageable, or if you have a younger one you may prefer to use a carrier/sling.
Please note the sessions will go ahead in most weather conditions, we encourage families to come along regardless of the weather, please dress yourself and your child appropriately - lots of layers, plus a hat and gloves on colder days, or a sunhat and sun cream on warmer days, and waterproof coat/all in one, and wellies usually work best. We advice snoods rather than scarves for safety around the campfire, please also tie children's hair back if it is long.
Although we do go ahead in various weathers, in the event of strong winds/stormy weather, and heavy/persistent rain we may need to cancel for safety reasons - cancellations will be posted on the FB page by 10am on the morning of the session.
The centre is located on Margrove Road just outside Boosbeck, find it on Google maps by typing 'Tees Valley Wildlife Trust' or 'Margrove Heritage Centre'.
The centre has a sign outside saying 'Tees Valley Wildlife Trust'.
