Solstice Duo

The Solstice Duo brings inspiration from the hard bop jazz genre originating in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s. In contrast to the bebop, hard-bop offers a more gritty and bluesy feeling with a heavier playing style and a more unkempt tone of improvisation. This era of jazz became popular with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and Horace Silver. Aside from the selected tunes from that era, the duo offers original compositions as well.
The Solstice Duo 受美國1950 & 1960年代硬式鮑勃爵士影響，樂風有別於傳統鮑勃樂，硬是鮑勃演奏的方式比較粗獷，也受到藍調影響，有著更重的律動和狂放不羈的感覺。這個時代的爵士樂，隨著Art Blakey和他的樂團Jazz Messengers，以及Horace Silver等人的，慢慢被帶向主流。除了帶來一系列硬是鮑勃的音樂，我們也會帶來一些自己創作的歌曲。
Josh Schaffer(史博哲)/薩克斯風
Since graduating in December of 2012 with a Master’s in Music from the University of Colorado at Boulder, Josh Schaffer has been working and playing in Taiwan. While studying under Tom Myer (prof. saxophone at the University of Colorado Boulder), he developed his jazz concepts out of a classical setting and has learned not only the musical nuances involved in classical performance and practice, but he also has been able to bring classical and traditional jazz styles together. Since his move to Taiwan, he has performed with a wide array of rock and fusion groups, big bands, pop and funk, and has led his own jazz quartet and trio.
2012畢業於科羅拉多大學博爾德分校碩士演奏文憑, Josh Schaffer畢業後來台灣擔任薩克斯風維修與演奏的工作,在校期間師承Tom Myer（科羅拉多大學博爾德分校音樂系教授）,在學習過程中開發了自己對經典爵士樂的理念及設定,並在演奏中融合古典音樂的技巧及想法,並且妥善運用。
畢業以來在科羅拉多州擔任職業演出,並參與多種不同風格的樂隊,且自己帶領爵士三重奏,四重奏,藍調以及巴西咻樂,不同風格類型的演出對Josh Schaffer有著極深的影響,讓他的演奏不僅僅是爵士樂,還廣泛地包含所有不同風格的樂種。
來到台灣之後,在這塊土地上與各路音樂好手演奏,並積極參與當地音樂創作以及演奏。
自幼學習鋼琴，於16歲開始接觸吉他。2014年被爵士的歷史和多元性深深吸引，並開始鑽研爵士樂。由於自學，以聽大量的音樂和採譜的方式學習爵士，因此有著自然有機的彈奏風格，也因為本身有幾年的Lindy(Swing)社交舞的經驗，對Swing搖擺樂有深入的了解，演奏上沿襲爵士傳統卻也帶有自己的風格。
2015年獲選台北爵士音樂節培訓樂團”青年菁英爵士樂團”
2016年以樂團”正能量五重奏”贏得台北爵士樂節新秀第二名
2018年創了Ska-Jazz樂團”Social Cats Association”
參與數個不同樂風的樂團，包括拉丁，Cumbia，Ska, 雷鬼，到節奏藍調，新靈魂樂和爵士等。
Steven Wang
With a background in piano, Steven started learning the guitar at the age of 16. Fascinated by the sound and history of Jazz, he started his journey in the genre in 2014. Mostly self-taught, he learned from the masters through transcribing and studying the records. As such, he developed an organic style that follows the lineage of traditional Jazz. Thanks to years of Lindy Hop (Swing dancing), he has a deep understanding of Swing and rhythm.
In 2015, Steven was one of 2 guitarists selected to be in a Taipei Jazz Festival youth project.
In 2016, Steven’s quintet placed 2nd at the Taipei Jazz Festival competition.
Co-founded Ska-Jazz band ‘Social Cats Association’ in 2018
Currently plays in many projects ranging from Latin, Cumbia, Ska, to R&B, Neo-Soul, and Jazz.
